Senator O’Brien comments on State of the State address

LANSING, Mich. — State Senator Margaret O’Brien, R-Portage, issued the following statement Tuesday after Governor Rick Snyder delivered his 2017 State of the State address:

“Governor Snyder took time during his State of the State address tonight to talk about some of our state’s highlights as well as some of the challenges that we are still facing. I appreciated the opportunity to attend and hear first-hand his priorities for the upcoming year.

“Our state’s economy continues to improve, with nearly 500,000 new private sector jobs since the governor took office, and more than 90,000 job openings are available today. We are experiencing the lowest unemployment rate in 15 years, and workers are earning more. More people are moving to Michigan and home values are on the rise. This is all encouraging news.

“As chairwoman of the Senate Veterans, Military Affairs and Homeland Security Committee, I appreciate that the governor underscored the need to fight for the service members who fought for us by focusing efforts on helping our veterans get a good education and find employment after their service, as well as ensure the health care they have earned and deserve.

“Other highlights included a continued investment in educating future generations of Michiganders, addressing and improving our state’s underlying infrastructure needs and continued reforms to make state government more accountable to taxpayers.

“Michiganders have a lot to be proud of in our state, and we must work together to ensure the positive momentum continues.”
